In this strange year when nothing happened “as usual” we still had plenty of reasons to celebrate. Like the War Eagles do on the field when something unexpected happens, we adjust and move forward.
Due to covid-19 issues the final home game of the season was cancelled which also caused the cancellation of our tradition of recognizing and celebrating our seniors who have helped to make Friday nights in South Forsyth so special through the years.
We adjusted and a senior celebration was held on Friday 11/27 prior to the team loading the buses for the first round of the Georgia High School State Playoffs. As the seniors left the helmet, underclassmen lined the tunnel exit, knowing one day soon it will be them leaving the tunnel on that field one last time.
War Eagle Marching band members couldn’t make this date work and held their own celebration a week earlier. We missed them.
In trying to keep with tradition as much as possible, senior football players and cheerleaders were announced over the public address system by the voice of the War Eagles, Doug Thomas. Parents and athletes were able to meet on the field for a photo and well deserved applause.
By necessity rather than choice, like this season and these seniors, it was a different celebration from other years. It was different but no less special. To them, sooner or later, it will likely be all the more special because it was different.
